State & Local Government

In addition to the awareness day or month proclamations that state and local governments have made for NEIDs, we also have advocated for state governments to take action that will improve the quality of life of NEIDs patients.

With the support of local politicians, patients, support groups and other organizations, we have been successful in the passing of two resolutions. Once adopted, the resolution becomes state policy and can be used to influence state government agencies.

2014 Michigan Activity: In 2014, our organization wrote and submitted a proposed resolution. We are currently advocating for patients to ask that a hearing be held so the legislation can move to the floor for a vote.

2013 Alabama Resolution: With the help of Alabama support groups, Public Policy Advisor Michael Ciamarra, Sen. Slade Blackwell and Rep. Allen Treadaway, we were successful in getting a resolution passed  in the Alabama legislature that says an NEI Center™ should be created in the state and more medical provider education of NEIDs is needed.

At the ceremonial signing, Gov. Robert Bentley, who is also a dermatologist, said these illnesses are hard to diagnose because clinicians don't want to take the time to figure it out.
